How to Pick the Perfect Color Palette
Posted by M. Hamilton on 5/10/2010 to Design Tips
In choosing a color palette for your home it is best to start out in your main living areas, such as your living room, dining room, kitchen and entry.

Pick your color scheme from major pieces in those areas.  Look at your sofa, rugs, and artwork. Pull colors that move you. Look for colors in the largest pattern, then choose your palette. A great rule of thumb is to divide it up 60-30-10. For example you choose Taupe, Sage Green, and Burnt Orange then an appropriate color combination would be:

- Taupe 60%: Wall color
- Sage Green 30% Sofa & Window treatments
- Burnt Orange 10%:  Accents & Accessories

Once you've finished one room you can move easily into adjoining rooms by simply choosing a color from that room and flowing it to the next, applying that color to maybe the fabric of the dining room chairs will bring the rooms together.
