Choosing The Best Rug Size

One of the common questions people ask when choosing items for their home décor, is “what size rug should I buy?” With so many rug sizes available, selecting the right size can present a challenge. Here are some tips to help you when selecting the right rug for your rooms:

Choosing the Best Living Room Rugs

For living rooms that have an open space with floating furniture, a rug is a great way to anchor the area. A rug in this instance should be big enough that all the furniture can sit atop the area rug without being squished. A 9 x 12 or a 10 x 14 would be the best choices in this arrangement. Determine between these two sizes by measuring your room.

When the sofa is pushed up against the wall, an 8 x 10 rug is a better option. Chairs and sofas should have the front legs resting on the rug and the back legs off of it. A coffee table or ottoman can be used to center the space.

A third option for living room rugs that works great for tighter spaces, is a smaller rug such as a 5 x 7 or a 6 x 9. Place this rug in between two sofas or a sofa and chairs. It’s a great way to anchor a space and define sitting areas.

Choosing the Best Dining Room Rugs

Using an 8 x 10 rug will work for most rectangular or oval dining tables. To be sure measure your dining room table and add an extra 4 inches to the length and width to be sure that it will look appropriate in your dining room. For a bigger dining room, you can use a 9 x 12 to fill the space.

Choosing the Best Bedroom Rugs

When deciding on the rug size for your bedroom, consider placement of the rug compared to the bed. If you choose a smaller rug such as a 5 x 7, pull the rug out from the bed so the bed doesn’t completely overtake the appeal of the rug. If your goal is to unify the bed and the nightstands opt for a larger rug. An 8 x 10 for a queen size and a 9 x 12 for a king.
